The Trophy

Cousin Garret came over the other day with a trophy he won playing on his summer baseball team.  Hudson was pretty intrigued by the trophy - and the story Garret told of how many home runs he hit to win it - for several days after that.  I knew my mom probably still had some of our old trophies from summer baseball, and I was right.  She had a whole box of them in the storage room.  So I picked out a baseball one and a soccer one for him and brought them home and surprised him with the baseball trophy one night when he was out hitting home runs.  He talked about for a couple days straight, and now has them sitting on the edge of his bed, gathering dust.

Tate's been working pretty hard lately too...

These little guys finally popped through a week or two ago!

What I've been up to lately...

I know I've been slacking in the blogging lately, buy in my defense, I've been working hard the past few months....  and when I'm not working, I'm either sleeping or holding a baby in my arms.  And I can't sacrifice the little sleep I do get to blog and it's hard to type one handed (as I'm doing right now!).  So those are my excuses!
In May our long time CA at the clinic quit.  So that was the kick I needed to get back in gear with clinic stuff.  Unfortunately, most of my time the first 2 months was spent placing help wanted ads, making an employee manual, interviewing and making phone calls for interviews.  It was crazy but we have been blessed with a wonderful new CA who jumped right in and is doing WONDERFUL.  But, as always, it was a transition, so then another month went by of training and then another month of cleaning up the billing, plus taking back all the insurance billing work for awhile till our new CA is ready to learn that.  Then I was finally able, with my dad's help, to finish our 2010 taxes (business and personal) and get those filed last week. So now I only have to catch up on the first 8 months of 2011 and I'll be all caught up!  So maybe by 2012! :)  It's meant some late nights (or perhaps I shouls say early mornings since I've been working till 2-3 am!).  But the good news is I'm getting it cleaned up and filing our 2010 taxes was a big milestone in getting there.

But on the nights I wasn't working on clinic stuff, or the nights I went to bed early to catch up on sleep, I have been working on one fun project.  A wallet I found on Etsy several months ago and really wanted for my birthday. But alas, my birthday came and went, and though I received many other wonderful gifts, my wallet was not among them.  So I decided to take things into my own hands.  I have to say I am pretty proud of how it turned out. I am not a seamstress by any stretch of the imagination, so to put this together based on some picturses off Etsy and this tutorial, was pretty brilliant of me (if I can say so myself!. And yes, I could have purchased her pattern off Etsy for $15...but I was trying to not spend any money on this project.  And I did pretty good - the only thing I had to buy was the outer denim fabric I used for the wallet and some interfacing. So I spent about $3 on this project.)  Here she is:

Nothing too fancy on the outside...and it's not perfect, but it works.

And nothing too extraordinary inside (although the fact that I made the credit card compartment, and the coin pouch - with a zipper, nonetheless - is pretty extraordinary to  me!)  Here's the part I love:

A cash envelope for each category in our budget that we use cash for every month!  All labeled and made from cute, durable fabric.
Now I can keep all the cash in my wallet organized, whether it's for groceries, my own personal money, clothes or the boys, each one has it's own place so I don't get confused as to which money was for which category.  And they won't get all torn up the way the paper ones did.
Took her out shopping yesterday and it worked really well!  Much better than just stuffing it in and hoping I could sort it out when I got home, which is the method I've been resorting to lately.

Tate in Action

Ignore the kid running around in his underwear, yelling and "whacking" things!

9 months

My little man is 9 months old already!  I can't believe my 2 pound 13 ounce preemie has turned into such a big boy!

We took both of the boys in for a wellness checkup last week.  Hudson weighed 32 pounds and was 37 1/2 inches tall.  That puts him in the 42% and 32% percentile, respectively.  Little shrimp! My main reason for taking him in was because of the "incident" he had last week, in which I accidentally knocked him unconscious.  We were wrestling in the basement and instead of catching him as I intended when he charged at me, I missed and he flew to the floor and hit the back of his head.  He was only out for 20 seconds or so, but it still freaked me out.  Plus that was the 3rd time that has happened to him.  Being only 3 years old, that's not a great track record and doesn't bode well for there being any tackle football in his future!  The doctor said that some people are just like that and there's nothing we could do about it.  He said as long as he doesn't start throwing up later after he hits his head, that nothing needs to be done except treat the headache.  Hudson never complained about his head hurting afterwards, although I asked him a million times.  Needless to say there is no more WWF allowed in our basement - with mommy anyways!

Tate weighed 16 pounds 3 ounces (1%, but 10% adjusted) and was 26 1/2 inches long (4%, but 25% adjusted).  His head was 17 3/4 inches - 43%.  So my boys must be really smart cause their heads are huge to hold their genius brains!  :)

Our biggest concern is the number of colds/sinus infections Tate has had this summer.  He has been sick a lot.  The pediatrician said it could be the fact that he was born early and his immune system and lungs are not mature, combined with the fact we kept him away from people for so long, that he just has to build up some immunity.  Or, he said if he continues to get a lot of sinus infections, it could be allergy related (Jamie's family has a lot of allergies.) He did say we don't have to be as concerned with RSV this winter and don't need to hibernate like we did last year.  I'm sure we'll stay home a lot more than we do now, just because it is cold and flu season, but at least we will be able to get out of the house when we need to.

Tate has finally figured out eating and now we can't feed him fast enough.  After the first few days of eggs, he lost interest in the food so we were just doing some mashed bananas, avacodos or applesauce occasionally to see if he would eat.  He never would.  Then a week ago I made him some peas and he devoured them and there's been no stopping him since!  So not sure if it was that he really likes peas or if he just finally decided he liked to eat.  So far he hasn't turned anything away. I am going to have to start fixing a lot more food to keep up with his appetite!

I also took Tate back to the audiologist last week for another round of tests.  Unfortunately, he still didn't pass the OAE hearing test.  However, he did pass an actual hearing screening.  They put us in the booth and trained him to respond to a noise in his ear.  When he heard the noise he knew that meant the little animal beside us would light up and start dancing.  It took a couple tries to train him and then he started turning his head to look at it before it went off.  So I could tell he must be hearing the sound through his earphones to make him look at it first.  Pretty cool.  The audiologist said he passed that test just fine, especially for only being 7 months adjusted, so she isn't real concerned about his hearing.  Plus he is starting to babble quite a bit and she heard him doing that as well.  So, again, she thinks his right ear canal is just still really, really tiny (He still had to have the newborn ear insert cause the other's were too big.  She just can't get over how small that ear canal is, every time we go in there.) and that's what is causing that one test too fail.  So she wants us to come back in 6 months and try it again.

Tate's first word- verified by 2 witnesses since Jamie still hasn't heard it and doesn't believe it - was "mama".  I have heard him say it several times this past week, unfortunately it's usually when he's worked up and crying.  But it's still mama!   He also started saying his "ba" sounds this weekend and we always call Hudson "Bubba" for "brother" so Hudson is pretty proud that he knows his name now too!  He has gotten pretty vocal in the past few weeks.

He hasn't started crawling yet, but he seems pretty close.  He sits up really well now and will lunge forward to grab a toy onto his hands and knees, but quickly flops back down to his belly.  From there he just gets upset cause he can't get anywhere until we pick him back up and start over.  So he's practicing!  My life will definitely change when he gets mobile!

Beep! Beep!

Tate loves riding in his car!  I tried it out the other day to give me somewhere else to set him down while we are outside playing (besides the dead grass!) and was surprised he liked it so much.  He reached right for the steering wheel and was having a good time.  The other night when I was gone to Bunco, Jamie pushed him up and down the driveway in it for 30 minutes!

The Dunk Tank

Hudson has had a fascination with playing dunk tank this summer.  Not sure how it started - one day he asked me if I remembered when he threw the ball at the thing and the boy fell in the water.  He was talking about Sterling's homecoming last October!  It's crazy the stuff he remembers.  Well, he really wanted to play dunk tank so we made up our own dunk tank in the bathtub.  He'd stand up and I'd throw the ball at the tub.  When it hit the back wall, he'd "dunk" down in the water.  Mostly just made a big mess, but he loved playing it.  Then when we went swimming at big Jacob's house they had a diving board so he was able to play another version of dunk tank there.

Last Sunday at church they announced that it was the last day of FX and for the last day they were having a carnival - with a dunk tank!  Hudson heard that and it was all he talked about all afternoon.  So I took him to the carnival, even though it was 105 degrees out.

When we got there no one was on the dunk tank yet and there weren't many kids around yet so I got up on there thinking I'd let Hudson give it a try - not sure he could even actually hit the target and knock me in.  Was I wrong!  He figured it out pretty quick and had a great time dunking me.  Then all the other kids lined up - and I figured since I was already wet it didn't really matter. So I ended up sitting there for awhile and got dunked quite a few times.  But it was kind of nice since it was so hot out!

And since it was a carnival, I even let him eat a hot dog, a sno cone and cotton candy.  What a day for him!

Happy [Belated] Birthday!

Jamie and I celebrated our birthday(s) a few weeks ago.  Yes, we have the same birthday, but he is 2 years older.
I made myself banana granola pancakes (with peanut butter, of course) for breakfast.

Made Jamie coconut chicken fingers for lunch.

Took a birthday nap with my little man.

And that weekend we celebrated with a pool party with family and friends.  Whenever there's a diving board the guys have to play this game to try to jump off and catch a ball or frisbee or something thrown at them.  Or all 3 try to jump off and throw it to each other.  But I got some good pics of them doing so.
